Kudos to those of you who took part in my informal rock star/movie quiz, particularly Miss Cellania, Tan Lucy Pez, G, Poppy Buxom and cj. I'd give the final score, but being a computer programmer, I'm not so good with math. Anyway, good job everybody.
So, here is my list of sci-movies that have a rock star playing a villain or the leader of a civilization. Let me know if I've missed any.
Tom Petty - The Postman
Tina Turner - Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
Sting - Dune, The Bride
Mick Jagger - Freejack (With Emilio Estevez, Rene Russo, and Anthony Hopkins, of all people)
Gene Simmons - Runaway (With Tom Selleck and Kirstie Alley)
David Bowie was the villain in Labyrinth (fantasy, not sci fi), but was also the lead in The Man Who Fell to Earth.
Sorry, I can't give credit for Grace Jones in A View to a Kill, and certainly not for Wayne Newton in The Living Daylights.
...And sci-fi movies starring members of the cast of the TV show Smith:
Ray Liotta - No Escape, Muppets from Space (!)
Virginia Madsen - Highlander 2 (Giving new meaning to the tagline "There can be only one"), Dune
Simon Baker - Land of the Dead (Sequel to Dawn of the Dead. This is a really good movie, believe it or not, even if you haven't seen the prequels), Red Planet
The title of this blog, btw, is a line from the movie Dune. And may be tied with "Nobody puts baby in the corner" for worst movie line ever.
